Maarten Hesselt van Dinter's "Tribal
Tattoo Designs" focuses on the
cross-cultural history of tattooing,
tattooing technology, and commonly
expressed motifs. Also examined are
societies where tattooing holds a
powerful impact in recent history, where
and how this custom is practiced, and
its significance as a form of human
transition and metamorphosis. Extensive
research is given to tribal designs,
which often were abstract images based
on local objects encountered in the
environment, such as animals and
landmarks. The artwork in "Tribal Tattoo
Designs" is extensively detailed, of an
academic nature, and should be on the
bookshelf of all anthropologists.

As
people around the world rediscover the
art and traditions of indigenous
peoples, tribal images have become a
leading source of tattoo designs. This
fully illustrated handbook shows nearly

Asia and Europe. Tribal Tattoos recounts
the history of body decoration, explains
the meanings and myths behind the
symbols, and offers many patterns that
can be combined into new motifs. All the
designs included can be enlarged and
traced to decorate any part of the body.
Full instructions for temporary tattoos,

This definitive work on the rich weaving
traditions of the Near East and Central
Asia analyzes the output of the six
major regional and tribal groupings:
Anatolian, Baluchi, Caucasian, Kurdish,
Persian, and Turkmen.
For the first time, the computer is
used to systematize the study of motifs,
designs, and patterns through more than
1,600 stunningly beautiful and
functional full-color images, all
especially created for this book. Each
section of the book contains both
ravishing full-page color examples and a
host of subdivisions into motif types
and attributions, examining the
derivations and uses of medallions,
field repeats, and borders, and the
relationships between them.
Pattern recognition has long been
used to determine the origin and age of
rugs, and this analysis of designs and
their component elements provides a
vital key to accurate attribution.
Detailed diagrams illustrate the way in
which individual motifs are adapted and
reinterpreted over time, their evolution
crossing historical, cultural, and
geographic boundaries. 1,672 color
illustrations.

Barnard's classic, now back in print, is
not only a decorating book, but also an
encyclopedia of ethnic textiles, their
history, and their care. Every page is
filled with gorgeous color photographs
of the use of textiles in settings from
the American southwest (Navaho blankets)
to London (Middle Eastern Kilims) to
Paris (African Kuba cloth). Items from
hats (Afghani) to huipils (Guatamala)
are shown framed, used as furniture
coverings, made into pillows, or just
hung imaginativly on a wall. I am
delighted to find it back in print in a
soft cover version. Each time I've
loaned out my precious hardbound copy
(and then only to special people), I
have made SURE I got it back. A
must-have for anyone who loves textiles,
and at a ridiculously low price given
the size of the volume and its plentiful
illustrations.

I've got many books on tattooing and
body piercing and I consider this one of
my favorite. It looks at the possible
reasons why people in the west get body
decorations and compares them to the
ritualistic purposes there are in tribal
cultures. I like it a lot because it
focuses on the ancient and traditional
aspect of body piercing, tattooing and
scarification. It contains exceptional
photographs all color) and goes into
great depth and detail. It doesn't talk
about body art in a superficial stand
point but considers it as an art with a
very ancient history. I feels its a very
worthwhile read which i constantly
reread and refer to and it never is
boring. Read more
